![]() ![]() Some musical works require the clarinetist to play several types of clarinet in the same piece. Clarinets come in a number of different sizes, and the standard B-flat clarinet is just over 2 feet long. The clarinet could easily be mistaken for an oboe, except for the mouthpiece, which uses a single reed. An oboe player will also play English horn if it is needed. Because it's larger, the English horn also has a lower pitch range than an oboe. At the bottom end of the English horn it opens out into a rounded bell shape, which gives it a warmer, fuller sound. It's longer than an oboe and its tube is a bit wider. The English horn is actually closely related to the oboe, also uses a double reed, and is played in the same manner. Listen for the special note "A" that the oboe plays before the music begins.ĭespite its name, it isn't English and it isn't a horn. In addition to playing in the orchestra, the first oboist is also responsible for tuning the orchestra before each concert. There are usually 2 to 4 oboes in an orchestra and they produce a wide range of pitches, from haunting sounds to warm, velvety smooth notes, which make the sound of the oboe very memorable. ![]() To play it, hold the oboe upright, blow through the double reed in your mouth, and use both hands to press down on the keys to open and close the holes and change the pitch. This vibration of the reed makes the air inside the oboe move, and thus creates sound. The oboe is a 2 foot long black cylinder with metal keys covering its holes, and its mouthpiece uses a double reed, which vibrates when you blow through it. The high piping sound of the piccolo is also heard in traditional drum corps and marching band music. At half the size of a standard flute, piccolos play the highest notes of all the woodwinds in the orchestra one of the flute players will also play piccolo if that instrument is required. Your fingers open and close the keys, which changes the pitch.Ī shorter version of the flute is called the piccolo, which means small in Italian. You play the flute by holding it sideways with both hands and blowing across a hole in the mouthpiece, much like blowing across the top of a bottle. A standard flute is a little over 2 feet long and is often featured playing the melody. Modern flutes are made of silver, gold or platinum there are generally 2 to 4 flutes in an orchestra. The flute is the oldest of all instruments that produce pitched sounds (not just rhythms), and was originally made from wood, stone, clay or hollow reeds like bamboo. Learn more about each woodwind instrument: ![]() The woodwind family of instruments includes, from the highest sounding instruments to the lowest, the piccolo, flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and contrabassoon. Just as with the stringed instruments, the smaller woodwinds play higher pitches while the longer and larger instruments play the lower notes. ![]() The clarinet uses a single reed made of one piece of wood, while the oboe and bassoon use a double reed made of two pieces joined together. The mouthpieces for some woodwinds, including the clarinet, oboe and bassoon, use a thin piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates when you blow across it. Metal caps called keys cover the holes of most woodwind instruments. You play them by blowing air through the mouthpiece (that's the "wind" in "woodwind") and opening or closing the holes with your fingers to change the pitch. They are all basically narrow cylinders or pipes, with holes, an opening at the bottom end and a mouthpiece at the top. Today, they are made of wood, metal, plastic or some combination. The instruments in this family all used to be made of wood, which gives them their name. ![]()

What happened next is a familiar story: young band makes music for pleasure, then reluctantly becomes a travelling business. The original lineup of Sigur Rós in Iceland, 2009 … (from left) Kjartan Sveinsson, Jón Pór Birgisson, Orri Páll Dýrason and Georg Hólm. You’re playing with emotions, but you don’t want to force-feed it. “Of course, you have to be careful not to go full Disney on it. “If I don’t get goosebumps, then we have to work a bit more,” says Sveinsson. In a genre with a forbiddingly studious reputation, Sigur Rós had an elemental grace and a direct line to one’s tear ducts. As a non-anglophone post-rock band from a “tiny little island in the middle of nowhere”, they didn’t exactly dream of Madison Square Garden, but their second album, 1999’s Ágætis byrjun, was a word-of-mouth phenomenon whose cheerleaders included Radiohead, Coldplay, David Bowie and Cameron Crowe. When Sigur Rós formed in 1994 as teenagers, Birgisson says, they made music because “it gives you a purpose to live and be happy”. “Our main purpose is the music but obviously there is this thing called life that happens around it and you have to deal with it,” says Hólm. A band whose music inspired breathless celestial metaphors seemed to fall to earth with an ugly thud. “There were definitely points when me and Jónsi would go, well, I guess we’re a band but we’re not really doing anything.” Amid all of this, Birgisson split from Alex Somers, his partner of 16 years and frequent artistic collaborator. Now in their late 40s, they look like mismatched detectives reuniting on a cold case in a Nordic noir show. “It was strange,” says Hólm, sitting in the band’s Reykjavik headquarters with returning keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson (who had left the band in 2013). Dýrason denied the allegations but resigned a few days later, temporarily reducing Sigur Rós to a transatlantic duo of Birgisson and bassist Georg “Goggi” Hólm. In September 2018, artist Meagan Boyd publicly accused drummer Orri Páll Dýrason of sexual assault five years earlier. They have all now been acquitted but Birgisson has been off the hook only since March. I cut the hole for the box first, then check to verify the location of the studs (I don't use hardware that requires me to attach to a stud, so I just have to make sure to miss it when cutting my hole), then measure off of some reference point that I'll be able to find down below. You only need to line up well enough to get it in the same bay, so you have a ~14.5" target. I don't know of any other way to get cables/pipes through the sill other than drilling, and it's allowed for plumbing, electrical, etc, so long as you then spray foam the holes afterwards (at least, it's required in my area, might not be in yours). What what you're planning already, I'd likely run an extra cat5e/cat6 cable, and then get an HDMI-over-twisted-pair (aka HDMI-over-cat5) extender if you wanted to go that route, or re-terminate it for RJ11 if you wanted to change it over to phone. It's easier to run lots of cables at once. Also, you then don't have to worry about crowding the box, etc. which you can't do as easily if you mount a box with little punchouts. (if you have a second person, have them push the cables up from below (or a straightened coat hanger or other wire to act as a needle, if the bundle of cables is too floppy), and then snag it from the hole with a wire bent into a hook). Is there a way to make these two holes line up? From the room above, I would then need to cut a hole through the plaster. Is this recommended, or does it cause any structural issues? I would be drilling the hole from the crawlspace up into the wall. It looks like many people drill a hole through the sill plate and then route the cables through the hole. I need to get the cables from behind the wall into the crawlspace. I have a raised crawlspace (4 feet high or more). Since I have existing wires in the box, will routing new cables through this box and through be a problem? I might want to run additional wires into this box later, such as phone cable for our DSL connection, or maybe an HDMI connection to another room (but this is a fantasy). Will this gang box will be too crowded? Is there an easy way to give me more space inside the gang box, or to deal with the thick coaxial cable? The cables are Ethernet, coaxial-something (for a roof mounted UHF/VHF TV antenna which we haven't installed yet) and speaker wire.
